Prepping a Walkway & Pea Gravel Landscape Bed: Small Job, Done RIGHT

Not every job we take on is a multi-acre clearing project or a full pool grading job — sometimes it's a smaller, focused dig that still needs to be done right. This past Saturday, we headed out to prep a small area along the side of a home for a new walkway and pea gravel landscape bed.

The Job

The homeowner had an overgrown bed running along the side of the house — grass creeping in, a couple of old plantings, and ground that hadn't been touched in a while. Their plan: clear it out and put in a pea gravel landscape bed with paver stepping stones leading along the walkway.

Before any pavers or gravel go down, the ground underneath has to be excavated and prepped properly. That's where we came in.

What We Did

  • Cleared the existing grass, overgrowth, and old plantings from the bed area

  • Excavated the area to the proper depth for a pea gravel base

  • Graded and leveled the ground so the finished bed sits even and drains correctly

  • Cleaned up the site so it was ready for the next phase — pea gravel and paver stepping stones

Small Job, Same Standards

It doesn't matter if it's a few acres or a few square feet — the prep work is what determines whether the finished product holds up. A poorly excavated or unlevel base means gravel that shifts, pavers that sink, and a bed that looks off within a season. We treat a small walkway prep job with the same attention to grading and depth as we would a much bigger project, because that's what actually makes the difference.

Planning a Pea Gravel Bed or Walkway?

If you're planning a similar project — a pea gravel landscape bed, paver walkway, or any hardscape feature — the excavation and prep work is the step that's easy to underestimate. Getting it right from the start means a finished feature that actually lasts.

We handle everything from small excavation and prep jobs like this one up to larger grading and land clearing projects throughout Bucks County and the surrounding areas.
